Northern Light Health has ended contract negotiations with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, effective October 1, 2025. This means they will no longer network with Anthem for doctors and some auxiliary services, and by December 31, 2025, they will also cease networking for hospital-based services. Beginning January 1, 2026, all Anthem Medicare Advantage plans will be out of the network as well. The situation highlights a significant divide; Northern Light’s chief financial officer states that their 1.5% reimbursement increase isn’t adequate compared to Anthem’s premium hikes. They’ve expressed frustration, asserting that Anthem hasn’t reimbursed healthcare providers appropriately. Conversely, Anthem warns that any significant refund increase Northern Light desires could lead to higher costs for patients.
Both companies have previously faced contract disputes but have managed to reach agreements before. As representatives from Northern Light lamented the lack of productive discussions with Anthem, they emphasized the importance of sustainable partnerships to ensure healthcare access meets the region’s distinct needs. They indicated they might consider a renewed offer if it aligns with their expectations.
Anthem, for its part, responded to the negotiations’ abrupt end with commitment to reach a new contract, clarifying that they are focused on providing affordable healthcare in Maine. They also made it clear that they are willing to maintain communication lines open despite the recent developments.
A letter outlining Northern Light’s concerns has been sent to Anthem’s leadership, but Northern Light expressed that they cannot wait indefinitely for constructive proposals without any indication from Anthem to engage. If there are questions from patients, Northern Light has directed them to their website for alternative insurance plans. This ongoing situation remains critical as both parties work toward a resolution.
