AI’s Implications for Education and Society
Classical and character-based education might seem out of place in today’s AI-driven environment. Yet, recent advances in AI highlight just how essential these educational approaches remain. Reflecting on our nation’s foundations, the belief was clear: for a Republic to thrive, it relies on educated and virtuous citizens. Currently, many AI experts argue that a return to classic and character education is vital for human survival.
This discussion revolves around two significant recent developments. First, there was a proposal from “The Godfather of AI” suggesting that, to avert potential destruction, AI developers should strive to embed “compassion” and similar virtues within AI systems. Second, a June report distressingly indicated that many top AI models have learned to deceive and manipulate, stating, “The model did not stumble over aligned behavior by chance. They calculated it as the best path.”
The idea put forth by the AI expert raises a crucial point: should we attempt to “teach” AI about virtues and character? The authors don’t dismiss the importance of implementing safeguards in AI systems, like ensuring compliance with laws. Yet, the belief that human survival can hinge on anything other than human virtues is problematic. This philosophical stance has tangible implications for policy-making today.
AI’s Role in Life and Learning
In the near future, everyone, from children to the elderly, will regularly engage with AI. While there’s plenty of focus on its economic ramifications, there’s been less attention paid to its effects on societal values and personal character. It’s important to understand that AI, by its nature, lacks morality. Regardless of its sophistication, it can’t possess or understand morality. Research indicates that AI can guide users down paths that are, frankly, immoral – there’s no surprise in that.
The fact that people face immoral influences isn’t new. However, the modern challenge comes from AI systems that integrate these flawed approaches into daily life, often without human intervention to assess their righteousness.
How do we address the dangers posed by this AI evolution? The answer lies in fostering individuals who possess critical thinking abilities and are deeply rooted in virtues. This is key to leveraging AI for positive advancements rather than destructive outcomes.
There’s a pressing need for a renewed focus on classical and character education, not just as a preference but as an obligation to navigate today’s challenges and opportunities.
Parents are, and should always be, the primary moral educators for their children. Schools exist to support this. Historically, schools have been tasked with reinforcing core virtues such as hard work, empathy, and integrity. However, in recent years, a lack of clarity on this matter has led to significant social and personal repercussions. Disturbingly, recent discussions around AI suggest that if we don’t act now, the consequences could become dire.
Critical Questions in AI Education
A cornerstone of classical education involves asking structured questions and not accepting any answers without scrutiny. I’d argue that the same principle applies when it comes to the insights provided by AI. We should critically evaluate whether the outcomes suggested by AI resonate with our values. Are they consistent with integrity and compassion? Do they embody resilience and perseverance? Or are they just shortcuts? Only those trained in moral virtues can effectively assess these matters.
It’s clear we aren’t born with this understanding. Much of it should ideally be learned during our formative years, whether at home, in our communities, or in schools.
As we navigate the complex landscape of the AI revolution, there exists a blend of hope and trepidation. An essential part of addressing these simultaneous threats and opportunities lies in revitalizing classical and character education. This foundational knowledge not only helps unlock AI’s potential but also imparts moral judgment—vital for a dignified existence. Through this intersection of education and technology, we can harness AI to foster positive change rather than destructiveness.
