Fatal Shooting Outside Staten Island Diner
On Friday night, a man with a serious history of mental health issues was shot and killed by police outside a well-known diner in Staten Island while wielding a realistic BB gun. This incident occurred at the Andrew Diner on Highland Boulevard in Eltingville just after 8 p.m.
Police reported that the diner had alerted officers about a man threatening patrons with a weapon. The individual involved was identified as Jesse Campbell, 44, who had a confrontation with two off-duty NYPD officers in front of the diner.
Although police have not officially confirmed Campbell’s identity, sources indicated he was involved in the altercation. During the conflict, a female detective from the Interior Bureau fired multiple shots, hitting Campbell multiple times, according to police and other sources.
There are reports of video footage showing the officers instructing Campbell to drop his weapon before the shooting occurred.
Following the shooting, Campbell was transported to Staten Island University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Sources revealed that he had expressed fears to his family about being killed by police, raising concerns about the nature of the incident. It was suggested by police sources that this might have been a case of “suicide by cop.”
A BB gun was recovered from the scene. A photograph taken nearby shows blood at the site, along with an abandoned black baseball cap.
Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella commented on the situation, highlighting the effort of the off-duty officers who responded to the threat. He expressed gratitude for their actions in maintaining public safety.
The NYPD also issued a statement indicating that the increased police presence in the area may lead to traffic delays.
