Denzel Washington’s Take on Cancel Culture

Denzel Washington has made it clear that he wants nothing to do with cancel culture. In a recent conversation, the actor expressed his indifference toward public approval and social media followers, suggesting that he doesn’t care if he’s labeled as “canceled.”

When pressed about the meaning of being “canceled,” Washington responded with skepticism, asking, “What does that even mean – being canceled?” A reporter clarified that it often relates to losing public support, to which he quipped, “Who cares? What initially made that support so significant?”

The discussion continued as the reporter noted that “followers are now currency,” but Washington dismissed that idea, saying, “I don’t care who follows whom.” For him, chasing followers or public affirmation seems unimportant.

He remarked, “You can’t lead and follow at the same time,” emphasizing his commitment to following a higher purpose instead. “I have faith in God. I have hope for man, but, well, looking around, things aren’t working very well,” he added.

Washington’s nonchalant attitude was echoed by director Spike Lee, who also expressed a lack of concern over cancel culture, stating, “I couldn’t care much.”

As Washington sat alongside Lee during this interview, he humorously remarked about the absurdity of cancellation, saying, “If you haven’t signed up, you can’t cancel it. Don’t sign up.” He then laughed, adding that the topic was starting to stress him out a bit.

A representative for Washington did not respond to a request for further comment. Throughout his storied career, he has indeed made a lasting impact in the world of Hollywood.

Earlier this year, he was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in “Gladiator II,” marking him as the most nominated Black actor in the history of the awards. He previously sparked rumors about retirement, clarifying that he is more interested in directing down the line but hasn’t made any definitive plans.
