A new chapter for the Bush family as Jonathan Bush considers running for governor of Maine.

Jonathan Bush Considers Run for Maine Governor

Jonathan Bush, who is related to former President George W. Bush, is exploring a possible candidacy for the governorship of Maine. He aims to challenge what he describes as the state’s “learned helplessness” and revive the so-called “Main Dream.” His recent message, shared through his nonprofit dedicated to Maine, gives insight into how he plans to connect with voters.

Recently, both former President Bush and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush attended a small fundraising event for Jonathan in Kennebunkport. He has formed an exploratory committee for his potential run and initiated efforts to promote his policy ideas. These steps might mark a resurgence for the Bush family’s political legacy, particularly after George P. Bush’s 2022 defeat in Texas was seen as a setback.

With Janet Mills, the current Democratic governor, set to leave her position in 2026, Maine presents an opportunity for new leadership. Mills won re-election by a significant margin against former Republican Paul LePage in 2022, which demonstrates the strength of Democrats in the state. However, political analysts now view the forthcoming race as “probably Democratic,” according to reports.

Bush’s vision emphasizes his deep family roots in Maine, stating, “Maine is the best place on the planet to raise a family.” He mentions that his family has been in the state since the late 19th century, while his wife’s roots go back to the 1700s. Yet, he voices concerns about the government’s failure to create a positive environment for economic growth.

“Maine has fallen into a state of ‘learned helplessness,’” he argues, pointing to the decline of schools and housing, lamenting that “our schools have fallen from the best in the country to the bottom of the barrels.”

Bush is seeking to distinguish himself by focusing on his entrepreneurial background and community involvement. In a recent interview, he discussed the “unwritten rules of the Bush family” and emphasized the importance of fiscal responsibility. He believes business acumen is vital for effective governance.

At 55, Jonathan Bush is primarily known for co-founding Athenahealth, a significant player in medical software, before stepping down in 2018 due to conflicts with investors. He later worked with a Boston startup focused on health data interoperability.

The competitive environment in Maine sees several Democrats vying for the governor’s position, including notable figures like Angus King III and Hannah Pingley. The Republican side is more fragmented, with various candidates vying for attention, reflecting divisions within the party.

A January Gallup poll highlighted both the potential challenges and advantages that Bush faces. While Trump retains strong support among Republicans, Bush benefits from Maine’s tradition of electing moderate candidates, as exemplified by Senator Susan Collins’ consistent victories.

Although Jonathan Bush hasn’t officially announced his candidacy, he’s expected to make a decision soon. Meanwhile, his nonprofit continues to produce policy papers and podcasts, trying to gauge the significance of the Bush name in current politics.

As the political landscape evolves, it will be intriguing to see how Bush navigates these dynamics in the upcoming gubernatorial race in Maine.
