Hochul turns down Mamdani's proposal for a taxpayer-supported supermarket at Hamptons gathering.

Hochul Opposes Mamdani’s Grocery Store Plan

Governor Kathy Hochul has rejected a taxpayer-funded supermarket proposal from socialist New York City candidate Zohran Mamdani, asserting, “I prefer free businesses.” This remark was made during a business breakfast hosted by billionaire John Catsimatidis in the Hamptons, drawing applause from the audience.

The proposed grocery plan poses a potential threat to existing chains like Gristedes and D’Agostino. Catsimatidis later commended Hochul’s stance, stating, “These types of grocery stores don’t work.” This dissent adds to the growing pushback against Mamdani’s agenda among Democrats, who contend it could undermine private grocery stores and overburden taxpayers.

Mamdani Under Scrutiny

In response to criticisms, Mamdani has faced ethical complaints regarding his use of a rent-stabilized apartment, despite earning nearly $150,000 as a lawmaker. A spokesperson for former Governor Andrew Cuomo criticized Mamdani’s proposals, highlighting failures of similar government-run initiatives elsewhere, like Kansas City’s recent closure of a city-owned grocery store, which had drained millions in taxpayer funds.

Critics’ Concerns

Critics argue that Mamdani’s supermarket plan could inflict serious harm on blue-collar Americans. The plan aims to establish one supermarket in each borough, costing around $60 million, ostensibly to combat rising food prices and enhance access to affordable groceries. However, detractors warn that this might actually diminish consumer choices and inhibit private competitors.

Amidst the controversy, Hochul remains a prominent figure in this political landscape, criticizing Mamdani’s platform and positioning herself as a counterbalance to what she labels unproven progressive policies. Mamdani’s campaign did not respond to inquiries about Hochul’s comments, nor did Hochul provide immediate feedback.
