The Jets’ starting defense didn’t see much action, but they did allow one significant play: an 80-yard touchdown pass from Russell Wilson to Bo Collins.
This play highlighted some issues in the secondary, as Collins managed to get past cornerback Qwan’tez Stiger and then beat safety Andrecisco.
There are definitely some concerns regarding the Jets’ secondary.
Sauce Gardner, the standout player, didn’t participate due to calf pain, which doesn’t seem too serious, but any injury to a key player brings worries.
Though Stiger did record an interception in Gardner’s spot, he also allowed some big completions.
Brandon Stevens, who has performed well in camp, made an impressive play by breaking up a pass from Wilson.
Safety remains a key issue.
It’s notable that the Jaguars opted to let Cisco walk in free agency.
Tony Adams was sidelined after struggling last season with the Jets.
Rookie Malaki Moore shows promise, but he’s not quite ready for game time yet.
Injuries have affected the Jets’ defense, losing some crucial players, including Gardner, Wil MacDonald IV (knee), and Quinnen Williams (calf).
This raises concerns about the team’s depth.
Rookie Right Tackle Armand Membou had a decent outing, though he gave up one pressure to Kayvon Thibodeaux.
The Jets know he still needs experience.
Membou played more snaps than other starters, which is telling.
After some difficulties in joint practices this week, he showed improvement on Saturday. He will face a tough test right away against the Steelers and TJ Watt in week one.
Now, regarding the receivers, those vying for a roster spot had a mixed performance.
Rookie Arian Smith struggled early with a drop and missed a couple of catchable passes but did manage to make two big receptions later on.
His journey to find his role seems a bit premature for now.
Brandon Smith had a solid camp, leading with five catches, although most were short gains.
Jamal Prickett came away with two receptions for 10 yards but had a drop.
Xavier Gipson exited the first half due to a shoulder injury, while Quentin Skinner made a diving touchdown catch in the fourth quarter.
This leaves the Jets with some challenging decisions as cut day approaches and they determine who will contribute to the offense.
One player making a strong case for a roster spot is running/kick returner Kene Nwangwu.
He had a notable 38-yard kick return to start the game and excelled in punt coverage, batting the ball to keep the Giants deep in their own territory.
While primarily a returner, he stepped up in the running game due to an ankle injury to Isaiah Davis, carrying the ball six times for 31 yards. This performance should give the Jets confidence in him as a potential fourth running back.
