Sidney Sweeney’s “Americana” Struggles at the Box Office

Sidney Sweeney’s latest film, “Americana,” had a disappointing debut at the box office following a contentious American Eagle ad campaign.

This crime thriller, directed by Tony Tost and featuring Sweeney alongside Paul Walter Hauser and singer Halsey, premiered in 1,100 theaters across the country. Unfortunately, it didn’t perform well, landing in 16th place and grossing about $840,000.

Efforts to reach out to Sweeney’s representative for comments were unsuccessful.

In “Americana,” the 27-year-old actress portrays Penny Joe Poplin, a waitress at a local diner with aspirations of making it as a country singer. The film revolves around the characters’ quest to possess a unique Native American artifact.

Last week, Sweeney took to social media to promote another project, sharing behind-the-scenes photos with the caption, “A few years ago, I filmed this little film with some friends.”

However, her followers were quick to dive into the ongoing controversy surrounding her most recent advertising efforts, particularly regarding her political affiliations. One user commented with a sense of humor about a wardrobe malfunction, while another expressed disappointment over Sweeney’s political stance.

Recent discussions have emerged about Sweeney’s involvement in an American Eagle campaign, where viewers suggested that wordplay involving “Jane” and “jeans” edged into problematic territory, even likening it to “Nazi propaganda.” In one ad, she spoke about inherited traits—like hair color and personality—and concluded the video by stating, “My jeans are blue.”

This campaign garnered a variety of reactions, with critics voicing their displeasure and even some celebrities, like Doja Cat and Lizzo, joining in on the ridicule. American Eagle eventually released a statement reaffirming their commitment to celebrating individuality and confidence in their clothing.

Interestingly, the ad even attracted attention from Donald Trump, who had positive remarks about it. Additionally, it has come to light that Sweeney is registered as a Republican in Florida, a detail that’s stirred further conversations among fans and critics alike.
