I Desire that Super Bowl in Britain

British Ambassador Advocates for a UK Super Bowl

Peter Mandelson, the U.S. British Ambassador, recently expressed a strong desire for the NFL to host a Super Bowl in the UK. Speaking to the Chicago Global Affairs Council on Thursday, he noted his earlier efforts at the first Super Bowl held outside the U.S., which took place in the UK.

“I want the UK Super Bowl. The timing doesn’t matter to me, but I’d love to announce it alongside the ambassadors,” he stated enthusiastically. “We really enjoy it.”

While the NFL has been staging regular season games in the UK since 2007, a Super Bowl outside of the U.S. would be a significant leap forward.

This initiative would mark the first time the Super Bowl has been held outside the United States since it began back in 1967.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time the UK has pushed for such a high-profile event. In 2024, London Mayor Sadiq Khan invited the Super Bowl to London, aiming to reinforce the city’s self-promoted title as the “world’s sports capital.”

“The Super Bowl means a lot to us,” Khan remarked, emphasizing the desire for American sports fans across Europe to experience it in London instead of just traveling to the U.S.

In 2023, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell also hinted at the possibility of hosting the Super Bowl abroad during a talk at the London Forum. He mentioned, “That’s not impossible; it’s been discussed before,” but clarified that there are currently no plans for the league’s premier event to be held in other countries.

As for London’s future NFL engagements, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is scheduled to host two games in October, but the upcoming Super Bowl is set for February 8th at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
