Bindi Irwin Shares Journey to Healing from Endometriosis

After 13 years of searching for answers, Bindi Irwin has expressed that she feels healed. In a touching post on Instagram, she opened up about undergoing surgeries to remove 51 endometriosis lesions, chocolate cysts, and her appendix. Dr. Tamer Seckin, a specialist in endometriosis, performed these procedures during two separate operations.

“As a teenager and young adult, I felt completely embarrassed,” Irwin shared, reflecting on the painful experiences tied to her endometriosis.

Her primary message encourages young women not to feel isolated or ashamed about the pain often dismissed as just “part of being a woman.”

Irwin, daughter of the late Steve Irwin, revealed her diagnosis in March 2023, drawing attention to a condition that impacts millions globally.

Understanding Endometriosis

Globally, endometriosis affects about 10% of women of reproductive age, and in the U.S., around 9 million women are affected. Research indicates that it can take, on average, 5 to 12 years to receive a proper diagnosis after symptoms begin.

The World Health Organization describes endometriosis as a painful condition where tissue similar to the uterus grows outside of it, leading to pain, inflammation, and even infertility. Common symptoms include pelvic pain, severe periods, pain during intercourse, and digestive issues.

If medication fails to alleviate symptoms, laparoscopic surgery, an approach that involves small incisions, is often recommended to remove endometriosis lesions.

This minimally invasive method generally allows for quicker recovery compared to traditional surgery, which usually involves a larger incision. Typically, recovery takes 2-4 weeks, though it may vary based on the individual’s health and the surgery’s complexity.

Despite being rarely encountered, surgical risks can include infection and injury to nearby organs. Essentially, surgeries like Irwin’s not only relieve symptoms but can also help with fertility preservation.

In May 2025, the Sekokin Endometriosis Research Center was inaugurated, marking the first significant U.S. facility aimed at enhancing the understanding of endometriosis and developing better diagnostic and treatment methods.

Irwin’s experience brings attention to the struggles many women face while seeking answers for their ailments. Her candid posts foster broader discussions about women’s health issues worldwide.

“I can now manage my daily activities without being overwhelmed by pain,” Irwin noted. “Little by little, I’m regaining my strength, and it’s hard to put into words how profound that feels,” she added.
