Mets Finally Achieve Back-to-Back Wins
In an exciting turn of events, the Mets have managed to win consecutive games for the first time in three weeks. They showcased a strong offense against Seattle’s George Kirby and kicked off their Little League World Series festivities with an impressive performance from Clay Holmes.
Despite entering the game with 14 losses in their last 17 outings, the Mets still held on to their third position for the NL wildcard, just ahead of Cincinnati.
Francisco Lindor continued his hot streak, collecting three hits, while Francisco Alvarez matched that total before leaving the game due to a wrist injury in the seventh inning. This injury, however, was really the only downside of the night for the Mets.
Holmes, who had struggled in his previous starts, managed to bounce back. In fact, he had only completed one inning in his last three appearances, making this outing particularly significant.
The game began with a bit of a shaky start; Holmes hit Randia Rozarena with a 92 mph sinker on his first pitch. But he quickly regained his composure, managing to get the major home run leader, Cal Raleigh, out and helped turn a double play.
Lindor kept the momentum going, hitting his fifth consecutive multi-hit game before he was picked off in the inning. The Mets struck first, scoring three runs in quick succession with some solid hitting.
Alvarez contributed an impressive RBI double, followed by a single from Jeff McNeil, which advanced Alonso. Brett Baty drove in another run, and a sacrifice fly from Mark Vientos made it 3-0 against Kirby, who had been solid in his recent outings.
However, the Mariners fought back, benefitting from another mistake by Lindor. After a double from Julio Rodriguez, the Mets found themselves in a tricky spot. Lindor misjudged a play that allowed a run to score, narrowing the Mets’ lead to 3-1.
Despite the Mariners’ efforts to close the gap, Kirby’s night ended earlier than expected as the Mets piled on another four runs. Vientos, who had two home runs, along with a double from Cedric Mullins, widened the gap to 7-1, resulting in Kirby being knocked out of the game.
Even though the Mariners managed to hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning, the Mets celebrated their first back-to-back wins since late July. It’s a step forward, but there’s clearly still a lot to build on.
