An 11-year-old girl in Massachusetts, Juliana Fisher, acted heroically when she ran to help after hearing her neighbor, Kathleen Freeman, cry out for assistance. Kathleen’s 5-year-old son, Jack Bass, had fallen into a 20-foot-deep well, which was concealed by a cover.
Juliana recalled the moment, saying, “I heard these screams, I heard those screams and someone said, ‘I’m going to call 911.'” Without hesitating, she bolted outside while Freeman was on the phone with emergency services.
In the meantime, Jack had slipped through the cover into the well and was calling for his mother, expressing his distress. Kathleen described it as a scream she had never heard before, a mix of panic and urgency.
When Freeman saw her son at the bottom, she was shocked to find him standing among the concrete, gripping a pole for support. As she comforted him from above, Juliana quickly evaluated the situation and, with her father’s assistance, retrieved a ladder. She lowered it into the well, giving Jack the means to climb back to safety.
Fortunately, he came out with only minor injuries. Freeman expressed deep gratitude, saying, “He’s really brave and I’m very grateful to Juliana. When he got out of the well, it felt so good.”
Thanks to Juliana’s quick thinking, the emergency response crew didn’t have to do much else—they simply placed a heavy metal plate over the well to prevent any future accidents. Jack was then taken to a local hospital for further check-ups.
Despite her brave actions, Juliana remained humble, stating, “I don’t know. No one would have done the same thing.” Nonetheless, Freeman’s family views her as a hero in their neighborhood.
