Off-duty NYPD officer kills 30-year-old suspect in armed moped attack while accomplice remains at large

Authorities report that an accomplice was riding an e-scooter during an attack in Washington Heights, where a 30-year-old man was shot after allegedly pointing a gun during an ambush on Sunday.

NYPD officials indicated that the officer involved was stationed outside a residential building on West 173rd Street and Amsterdam Avenue shortly before 9:45 p.m.

According to reports, the 30-year-old dismounted his bike and inquired about another individual’s identity, though the officer’s name hasn’t been disclosed yet. Deputy Chief Eric Pagan, who is the executive officer of the Manhattan North Patrol, spoke during a press conference early Monday morning.

Upon noticing the weapon, the officer instantly drew his firearm and fired several shots at the suspect, according to Pagan.

The second suspect then escaped on his moped, the chief noted.

Emergency responders acted quickly to aid the individual who had been shot and transported him to Harlem Hospital.

9mm firearms were recovered at the scene, as stated by Pagan.

The injured officer is currently receiving treatment for a life-threatening injury at a community hospital.

“Every day, the men and women of the NYPD respond to calls to protect and serve, regardless of their duty status, and we witnessed that commitment last night,” Pagan remarked.

In a related incident from last month, a U.S. border officer was shot in the face during a confrontation with undocumented immigrants on a moped near Fort Washington Park, just a block from Washington Heights. Fortunately, he managed to return fire and injure the assailant.

This recent assault involved two suspects, Miguel Francisco Mora Nuñez and Christian Aibal Vellore, who also rode a moped during the encounter.

The investigation is ongoing.
