Red Sox add Nathaniel Lowe to strengthen their playoff chances after unexpected release

AL East Race Continues Post-Deadline

The competition for the top spot in the AL East is far from over, even after the trade deadline.

The Boston Red Sox have signed slugger Nathaniel Lowe, who was recently let go by the Nationals to make room for a younger player. Lowe is expected to bolster Boston’s lineup during this crucial American League playoff stretch.

After losing Tristan Casas to injury earlier in the season, the Red Sox had to get creative. Rafael Devers, another former slugger, was traded to the Giants, leaving a gap that Lowe is now set to fill at first base.

While Abraham Toro and Remy Gonzalez have primarily manned first base, the expectation is that Lowe will take on a significant role, especially against right-handed pitchers.

Toro had been performing well but has struggled lately, which raises questions about his future with the team.

No formal announcement has been made regarding Toro’s status, though speculation is swirling about a possible DFA move.

Lowe’s time with the Nationals saw him enduring a tough season, with a batting average of .216 and 16 home runs, although he still managed to drive in 68 runs.

“We want to give young players a chance,” said Nationals interim manager Miguel Cairo after the decision to release Lowe. “We have young talent we want to evaluate.” In fact, they plan to focus on developing these younger players over the remaining games.

Lowe previously earned the Silver Slugger Award in 2022, showing he has the potential to be a powerful asset, having hit 27 home runs with a .302 batting average that year.

The Nationals have faced challenges with their lineup this season, with James Wood being one of the few bright spots. Recently, they elevated Robert Hassell III, one of the promising players acquired in the trade for Juan Soto.

Along with Hassell, Washington gained Wood, Mackenzie Gore, and CJ Abrams, making the trade beneficial in terms of future talent.

As it stands, the Red Sox are 68-57, sitting in second place in the AL East, trailing the Toronto Blue Jays by five games and slightly ahead of the Yankees.
