All-American Classic: West team comes back to secure victory

West Team Stages Comeback to Win All-American Classic

The West Team overcame a 4-0 deficit to secure a 9-4 victory against the East Team during the Dick’s Perfect Game All-American Classic at Petco Park on Sunday. Eighteen-year-old Cole Prosek earned the MVP award, which is quite an achievement for his role in the comeback.

In a pivotal moment, the West Team scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, with Prosek playing an essential part of the rally. He was involved in a crucial double steal and contributed with RBI singles that helped tie the game, really shifting the momentum.

Eventually, in the seventh inning, the West took a 5-4 lead, and Prosek added another RBI single to widen that lead. Just to note, he’s currently a senior at Magnolia Heights High School in Senatobia, Mississippi, and he’s set to play college baseball at Ole Miss. Plus, he’s eligible for next year’s MLB draft—no pressure, right?

After the game, Prosek reflected on his experience: “Playing in this game is a big goal for me, one of the biggest I’ve ever had.” He expressed mixed feelings about the anticipation of being chosen in the draft, describing it as “a bit unsettling,” yet exhilarating when that call comes. “Being here, playing with all these great players and friends, was just amazing,” he said.

The All-American Classic showcases the top 60 high school baseball talents from North America, providing them a significant platform. Prosek was clearly thrilled about earning the MVP trophy, stating, “I’m definitely going to put this in my room. It’s one of the best feelings I’ve ever had in baseball.”

This classic has been running since 2003 and has featured many notable names who went on to have successful MLB careers, including Bryce Harper and Gerrit Cole. Over the past 22 years, of the 1,126 players who participated, 850 have been drafted, with a notable 293 in the first round.

This year’s event was managed by Hall of Famer Trevor Hoffman and former Padres All-Star Ryan Cresco, who brought together a coaching staff of various baseball legends. Padres general manager AJ Preller was among the scouts and analysts in attendance, getting a firsthand look at some of the nation’s best young talent.
