Pacers Suffer Major Setback in NBA Draft Lottery
The Indiana Pacers faced a significant setback on Sunday when they lost their top pick in the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery, a development that has left many wondering what went wrong.
After a challenging season that saw them finish with a dismal 19-63 record, just a year after making it to the NBA Finals, they entered the lottery with a 52.1% chance of securing a top-four pick. But things quickly took a turn for the worse. None of the Pacers’ selections were among the first four picks, and their hopes of landing the coveted No. 1 overall pick evaporated.
The reason behind this disappointing outcome stems from a prior trade with the Los Angeles Clippers. The Pacers had acquired Ivica Zubac and a first-round pick, but importantly, their pick was protected in the top four. This meant they could retain their spot only if they finished within those top four picks.
Instead, they ended up with the fifth overall pick, effectively handing the Clippers a valuable asset in next month’s draft.
In the aftermath of this debacle, Pacers’ basketball operations director Kevin Pritchard took to social media to accept responsibility. He expressed his regret, stating, “I am truly sorry to all the fans. I was the one who took this risk. I thought we got lucky. But remember, this team deserves a starting center to compete with the best teams next year. We’ve always been resilient.”
It seems the Pacers have been trying to aggressively maneuver their way through rebuilding, and the lottery was intended to be a key component of that process. Yet this time, unfortunately, it backfired.
Pritchard’s candid acknowledgment didn’t quell the fanbase’s frustration, with comments flooding in on social media. One user lamented, “You lose Myles Turner and add Zubac. You also lose Mathurin and the fifth pick, getting nothing back in return.” Another user described this draft as a generational opportunity and expressed incredulity that the Pacers missed out on such a deep talent pool.
Adding more complexity to the Pacers’ situation, they have been without All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton for the entire season due to an Achilles injury sustained during the NBA Finals. However, they are expected to welcome back several key players, including Pascal Siakam, Andrew Nembhard, and Aaron Nesmith, next season.
This upcoming draft class is generating buzz for its depth and talent, with noteworthy prospects such as BYU’s AJ Divanza and Kansas’ Darin Peterson expected to make waves.
