Trump and Zelenskyy gather as legislators prepare sanctions on Russia

Trump’s Meeting with Zelensky and European Leaders

Lawmakers are gearing up for President Donald Trump’s upcoming meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House. This meeting comes on the heels of Trump’s recent summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska. Depending on political alignment, reactions vary, with Republicans praising Trump’s diplomatic efforts and Democrats criticizing the legitimacy he grants to Putin.

Democrats Skeptical of Ceasefire

Many Democrats express doubt that a ceasefire in Ukraine will be achieved as a result of Trump’s meetings, particularly following the Alaska summit.

Senate Majority Whip John Barasso, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, emphasized Trump’s demonstration of “American Strength and Leadership.” He noted that European nations are also taking steps to counteract Putin’s actions, asserting, “The killings need to stop.” He believes a long-lasting peace would benefit Ukraine, Russia, Europe, and the U.S.

Yet some lawmakers recognize that, should negotiations falter, imposing sanctions may be the next logical step.

Bipartisan Support for Sanctions

Senate Majority Leader John Thune remarked on the Senate’s readiness to support Trump in maintaining leverage over Russia. He referred to the necessity for economic means to encourage productive negotiations for a lasting peace in Ukraine.

Last month, Trump indicated a 50-day window for Putin to agree to a ceasefire, which he later shortened to just 10 or 12 days. While no immediate agreement seems forthcoming, the Trump administration suggests that Putin has acknowledged the need for Ukrainian security agreements.

Zelensky’s Critical Visit

Zelensky’s arrival for meetings is seen as pivotal, especially regarding assurances for Ukraine’s security.

Despite the discussions, Senate Democrats urge immediate advancement on sanctions ahead of Trump and Zelensky’s high-stakes engagements. Senator Jeanne Shaheen called for decisive action by Congress to impose significant sanctions if Trump does not take appropriate steps after returning from overseas.

She emphasized the necessity for bipartisan legislation to bolster security measures for Ukraine and to address those in Russia’s orbit, especially as civilians suffer from ongoing conflict.

Path to Peace

Lawmakers express a unified desire for a clear pathway to peace. Senator Mike Lee highlighted the importance of prioritizing American interests and negotiating an end to tensions, underscoring that it would also greatly benefit Ukrainians being used in proxy battles.

Senator Tim Kaine expressed hope that Trump will directly address the Russian aggression in discussions with Zelensky and European leaders, insisting that decisions regarding the next steps should not be at the mercy of the Kremlin.
