Trump reveals plan to eliminate mail-in voting for federal elections, stating that ‘Elections cannot be fair with mail-in ballots’

Trump Challenges Mail-in Voting

President Donald Trump has expressed a strong opposition to mail-in voting, labeling it as fraudulent and emphasizing a need to restore “integrity” to the electoral process. In a lengthy social media post, he articulated his stance clearly.

“I’m going to lead the move to get rid of mail-in votes. It’s a very inaccurate, very expensive, and very controversial method that costs ten times more than a more straightforward approach.”

Trump further argued that the U.S. is unique in its use of mail-in voting, claiming that other countries abandoned the practice due to widespread voter fraud. He indicated that this initiative aims to address concerns surrounding the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.

“Democrats are strongly opposed to this effort, which is unprecedented in terms of fraud, as we work to bring integrity back to voting. States should remember that the federal government plays a supporting role in counting votes.”

“Elections cannot be honest with mail-in voting, and everyone knows this, especially Democrats. Republicans will fight hard to restore integrity to our elections.”

Historically, Trump has criticized mail-in voting as being prone to fraud, favoring in-person voting instead. It’s interesting to note that Democrats tend to use mail-in voting more frequently than Republicans, who generally prefer the traditional voting method.

In response to Trump’s remarks, Marcus W. Robinson, a senior spokesman for the Democratic National Committee, argued that the president’s stance threatens the voting rights of many Americans, including military families and expatriates.

“Trump is always trying to shift the blame for his own failures. We will continue our work to ensure that all eligible Americans can vote and that their votes count,” Robinson stated.

A previous executive order from Trump attempted to prevent the counting of mail-in ballots that arrived after Election Day, but a judge later blocked this, asserting that the president lacks authority to enforce election rules on a state level.

According to Columbia law professor Richard Brifor, any significant changes to federal voting procedures would likely need congressional approval, as they can’t just be adjusted through federal orders.

“Congress oversees the regulation of federal elections, but there isn’t any law banning anything other than paper ballots,” added James A. Gardner, a professor at the Buffalo School of Law. “If that’s the case, then the president would have the authority to implement such changes.”
