Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacey Garity (R) has announced her candidacy in the upcoming governor’s race to challenge current Governor Josh Shapiro (D), who is seeking re-election next year.
Garity officially declared her intention to run with a video posted on the social media platform X on Monday, marking her as the first significant Republican challenger to Shapiro for the 2026 election.
In the video, Garity criticizes Shapiro, who is also rumored to have presidential aspirations for 2028, suggesting he’s more focused on national efforts and fundraising elsewhere rather than tackling pressing issues at home in Pennsylvania, such as delays in the state budget approval.
“Today, I’m announcing my run for governor of Pennsylvania. I promise to work diligently every day to resolve the challenges that Josh Shapiro has created,” Garity stated.
The video also emphasizes her military background as an Iraq veteran who attained the rank of colonel. It additionally highlights her connection to President Trump, portraying her as a “strong ally” of his administration.
Garity expressed her intention to make Pennsylvania more affordable and to encourage job opportunities for young adults to remain in the state.
“I’m not just seeking your support,” she added. “I’m committed to putting in the effort every day to achieve this.”
While Garity is the first Republican to officially enter the race, others may join. Senator Doug Mastriano, who was the GOP nominee against Shapiro in 2022, is contemplating another campaign.
Mastriano has garnered attention for his far-right views, facing challenges with fundraising and voting efforts. Despite losing by nearly 15 points to Shapiro, he still gained traction among Republican primary voters.
Some potential candidates, such as Rep. Dan Moother (R), have ruled out running, although Trump has expressed support for him. Having backing from the president is seen as critical for Republican candidates aiming for success.
Nonetheless, defeating Shapiro will be difficult. He has proven to be an effective fundraiser and has maintained significant popularity during his tenure as governor.
When asked about Garity’s potential candidacy, Shapiro indicated he would not engage in the internal Republican competition.
“My focus? Continuing to create jobs in Pennsylvania,” he remarked. “I’m ensuring our schools receive adequate funding, increasing police presence, and collaborating with both parties to achieve results. That’s my priority.”
The Democratic Governors Association (DGA) has criticized Garity, labeling her as “extreme.” They take issue with her support for Trump’s policies and her stance on controversial matters like the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
“Whether it’s Stacey Garity or any other extreme candidates vying to challenge Governor Shapiro, the eventual Republican nominee will face a tough battle against a strong record of bipartisan cooperation, investment in public safety, and education funding for all Pennsylvanians.”
