British Ambassador Advocates for Super Bowl in the UK

Peter Mandelson, the British ambassador to the U.S., recently expressed his desire to host the Super Bowl in the UK. He’s been making his case since February at various sporting events in the United States.

During a speech at the Chicago Global Affairs Council, he humorously mentioned, “I made a big pitch for the first Super Bowl outside the United States in the UK.” His enthusiasm was clear as he declared, “I want the UK Super Bowl. I don’t care when it happens, but I want to announce it during the ambassador. We love it, we love it.”

While the audience laughed at his comments, he isn’t alone in this aspiration. London Mayor Sadiq Khan has also voiced his support, claiming that hosting the Super Bowl would solidify London’s status as the “sports capital of the world.” He emphasized that this event matters a great deal to them because of their desire to draw American sports fans from Europe, not just for them to travel to the U.S.

The NFL has started regular season games in London since 2007, marking the first official game played outside North America. The league has plans for two games at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in October as part of its ongoing international strategy.

Despite the push for the Super Bowl to be held in the UK, the event has consistently taken place in the United States since its inception in 1967. The next Super Bowl is set for 2026 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Following that, Super Bowl LXI will occur at Sophie Stadium in Inglewood, California, and Super Bowl LXII is planned for Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
