Hamas Considers Ceasefire Proposal
Hamas has reportedly shown willingness to accept a ceasefire proposal initially introduced by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff around three months ago.
Back in May, Palestinian groups had rejected Witkoff’s ideas. The details included a suggested ceasefire, which aimed to ease humanitarian aid restrictions instead of releasing all 1,111 detained Gaza residents and called for the return of 18 deceased Israeli hostages in exchange for a 60-day ceasefire along with the release of 125 Palestinian prisoners.
This past Monday, it seems Hamas has accepted a similar plan put forth by Egyptian and Qatari mediators. Israel, meanwhile, is reportedly prepared to advance into Gaza City, which is considered the last stronghold of Hamas. Former President Donald Trump had suggested that Hamas’s defeat was on the horizon.
Reports indicate that on Monday, Hamas communicated to mediators their acceptance of a ceasefire framework that includes the release of hostages. This agreement reportedly proposes a 60-day truce and the lifting of restrictions in exchange for 10 living hostages, as well as a path forward for negotiations in Gaza City’s imminent offensive.
The terms agreed upon involve the exchange of 10 hostages for 150 Palestinian security prisoners during the period of truce, along with the return of the remains of those who lost their lives.
As for Israel, there hasn’t been a formal response to these renewed proposals, which differ only slightly from Witkoff’s original concept. However, there seems to be an acknowledgment of Hamas’ current military challenges.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may face increased pressure to accept these terms, especially following a wave of significant protests in Israel last Sunday. Even if it requires some compromises on Israel’s goal to fully dismantle Hamas, the extensive public outcry could compel the Prime Minister to reconsider, perhaps even agreeing to a partial hostage situation.
In recent statements, Israel indicated a preference to ultimately secure the release of all hostages and conclude hostilities with a decisive victory over Hamas.
