Mayoral Conflict in NYC Over Prostitution Legalization

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has openly criticized mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist. Adams’s remarks came during a recent press conference, where he took issue with Mamdani’s views on prostitution.

“I can’t be more clear. I’m a God-man. Mamdani claims she’s Muslim. I doubt the Quran condones women selling their bodies on the streets,” Adams stated.

He added, “What he’s reading doesn’t align with my Bible. As someone of faith, I’m puzzled by which religions endorse prostitution.

Mamdani had previously expressed support for decriminalizing prostitution back in 2020.

“I’m eager to support the decriminalization of sex work, as I believe it is a job,” Mamdani mentioned during a 2021 Congressional meeting.

Despite this stance, since Adams’s administration began, the 33-year-old candidate has minimized his vocal advocacy for legalized prostitution.

Adams remarked, “He seems lost on the issue of sex trafficking, which is intertwined with prostitution. We’re aiming to combat crime, not promote what he’s suggesting.”

“We’re not addressing the women out there forced to sell themselves. No one should have to do that. It’s a dangerous belief for our city,” he continued, emphasizing the need for a safe urban environment.

Shortly afterward, a spokesperson for Mamdani pushed back against Adams’s criticism, claiming the mayor’s policies had failed those impacted by sex trafficking and prostitution.

“Adams’s budget decisions have cut crucial funds for services aimed at victims of these crimes,” the spokesperson stated. “As mayor, Zohran will focus on genuine public safety and allocate funds to support these victims.”

If Mamdani were to win the mayoral race, he would need to work with state legislators to implement laws that decriminalize prostitution.
