Texas Democrats Protest Floor Votes
Democratic lawmakers in Texas have chosen to spend the night on the floor of the Capitol in a protest against the Republican-led redistricting effort. This decision aims to prevent their Republican counterparts from advancing new Congressional maps. Representative Nicole Collier, who represents a district in Fort Worth, has voiced her reasoning, stating that she feels like a “political prisoner” during this ordeal.
Collier remained in the Texas House overnight into Tuesday, as the legislative body isn’t set to reconvene until Wednesday, when further discussions on the redistricting map are expected. Reports suggest that Democrats in the Capitol faced challenges, being pursued by the Texas Public Safety Director and pressured to sign documents and accept surveillance just to leave the building.
Recently, tensions have risen between the Texas House Democrats and Republican leadership. This standoff follows earlier attempts by Democrats to deny a quorum needed to pass a Republican bill supporting Donald Trump, which could potentially give the GOP five more seats.
Upon the Democrats’ departure from the scene, Governor Greg Abbott and other Republican leaders threatened to bring them back forcibly if necessary. Democrats have indicated they will not return until another party member takes steps to “nullify” the new Republican congressional maps. They have also committed to staying away until the special legislative session called by the governor to address district changes and other key priorities is complete.
The prior special session ended last Friday, but quickly, a second session was called, and the Texas Senate has already moved forward with the proposed measures.
