Suspect Shot by Secret Service Near White House Identified
This week, the U.S. Secret Service announced the name of a suspect who was shot and killed near the White House. According to sources, 45-year-old Michael Marks from Texas was allegedly carrying a firearm just a few blocks from the iconic location on Monday.
Earlier reports indicated that Marks had pulled a gun, prompting a response from agents in the Secret Service Uniformed Division. At a news conference, Deputy Commissioner Matt Quinn shared that the situation escalated when Marks allegedly fired at officers while they attempted to confront him close to 15th Street and Independence Avenue, leading them to return fire.
During the incident, Quinn also mentioned that a juvenile was injured by Marks, though the injuries were serious but not life-threatening. The confrontation reportedly began after a trained observer noticed “visible signs” of a weapon on Marks.
Quinn explained, “My understanding is that they looked at the print. Trained surveillance personnel are continuously scanning the area for potential threats, and they observed evidence of a firearm.” When officers made contact with Marks, he reportedly fled on foot, drew his weapon, and shot at the agents, who then engaged him in return.
Interestingly, Quinn noted that Vice President J.D. Vance’s motorcade had been in the vicinity shortly before the shooting. However, it seems this was unrelated to Marks’ actions. He also responded to inquiries regarding whether Marks had targeted President Donald Trump, particularly in light of recent events at a dinner for the White House Correspondents’ Association. “I can’t say that. I’m not going to speculate,” Quinn said, adding that officers patrol the area extensively at all hours. “We don’t know if it’s directed at the president, but we’ll find out.”
After the incident, Marks was transported to a local hospital, but there has been no update on his condition from authorities. Furthermore, prosecutors are yet to disclose any charges he might face in connection with this event.
