John Kruk’s Musings During Phillies Game

During a recent game between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Seattle Mariners, former Phillies player John Kruk found himself deep in thought. Kruk, who now serves as a color commentator for NBC Sports Philadelphia, was pondering a rather intriguing question: who actually invented the watch?

As he casually brought up this topic with his broadcast partner, Tom McCarthy, Kruk said, “So you know what I think of things when I have free time?” It was almost as if he was processing out loud. McCarthy responded, agreeing it was an interesting question. He theorized that maybe the creator of the clock had previously used the sundial to figure out time.

But then Kruk chimed in with a teasing remark, “But are you accurate?” That little back-and-forth felt very much like a real conversation, rather than a rehearsed exchange.

Interestingly, it’s quite challenging to pinpoint the exact inventor of the watch. Early civilizations had their own timekeeping methods; for instance, ancient Egyptians and Babylonians used sundials and water clocks as far back as 1200 BC. It’s fascinating to think about how those primitive tools evolved into the watches we use today, especially as many folks now rely on digital devices instead of analog ones.

Kruk’s curiosity didn’t stop there. He seems to enjoy these philosophical questions sprinkled throughout baseball games, eager to keep fans engaged with new brain teasers. As he continues this fun approach, we might expect more of these thoughtful moments in future broadcasts.
