Homeland Security Secretary Announces Border Wall Update
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem unveiled plans on Tuesday to paint the entire southern border wall black. This decision is part of the Trump administration’s initiative to enhance the wall’s effectiveness as a deterrent to illegal crossings.
While addressing the media near the southern wall in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, Noem pointed out that a darker paint would absorb more heat, making it more challenging for individuals to climb. She noted that painting the wall black could also extend the lifespan of the metal structure.
In response to a query about the reasoning behind the new paint, Noem acknowledged President Trump’s request for this change. She described the wall as quite tall and difficult to scale, adding, “It goes deep into the ground.”
Noem expressed confidence that this initiative, which includes a significant new funding bill provided to Congress in July, would provide essential resources for ongoing construction efforts. She indicated that work was progressing at a rate of nearly half a mile per day. Additionally, investments in technology such as cameras and sensors are also part of the broader strategy.
While discussing border security, Noem emphasized that the administration is not solely focused on the southern front. “We’re working diligently to secure every inch of the border,” she remarked, stressing the importance of borders to maintain national integrity.
Accompanying Noem were several Border Patrol agents and officials. Interim Chief Patrol Agent Walters Rosser from the El Paso Sector noted that current arrest rates in the sector are significantly lower than during the Biden administration, where they peaked at around 2,300 daily in 2023.
Rosser further shared that most of the migrants arrested are single adults hailing from Mexico, Guatemala, and Ecuador. He concluded that while agents previously had a more passive role, they are now more actively apprehending individuals attempting to cross illegally.
“The morale among our agents is high,” Rosser added, underscoring their commitment to national security. He concluded by reiterating the significance of clear messaging that illegal entry into the country is unacceptable.
