Florida Executes Man Convicted of Murder
On Tuesday, Florida executed a man who was found guilty of luring a woman from his insurance office and then fatally stabbing her.
Kayle Bates, aged 67, was pronounced dead at 6:17 PM after receiving three lethal injections at the Florida State Jail near Starke. His death sentence, which stemmed from a conviction on June 14, 1982, included charges of first-degree murder, luring, armed robbery, and attempted sexual assault.
Randy White, the husband of the victim, witnessed the execution. During a post-execution press conference, he expressed his gratitude to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for endorsing the execution.
“I truly appreciate the outpouring of love and support from many who didn’t know us. Thank you; it means more than you realize,” he stated.
Bates had lured Janet White from her workplace to a wooded area behind the building. Prosecutors noted that he not only attempted to assault her but also fatally stabbed her and stole a diamond ring from her finger.
Bates attempted to appeal his conviction, claiming that the process for signing his death warrant was discriminatory. However, a judge dismissed the lawsuit. The Florida Supreme Court also rejected his arguments regarding the consideration of organic brain damage during sentencing.
Tuesday’s execution marked the tenth this year in Florida. Nationwide, 29 executions had been carried out by Tuesday.
Looking ahead, at least nine more executions are scheduled across seven states for the remainder of the year.
