A man from Florida, Christopher Jones, found himself in a bit of trouble after being caught speeding over 100 mph while on his way to a wedding. During a “Super Speeder Saturday” traffic enforcement initiative in Brevard County, he was clocked at 161 mph in a 70 mph zone by Deputy Caleb Sanchez around 9 a.m. on Saturday.
Jones, 29, was reportedly dressed in a black suit and white shirt when he explained to deputies that his excessive speed was due to running late for the wedding. Interestingly, a photo released by the sheriff’s office showed him in his formal attire, complete with slide sandals—a detail that caught a lot of people’s attention online.
Sheriff Wayne Ivey highlighted the arrest through a social media post, humorously labeling it the “Super Speeder Saturday – Wedding Crashers Edition.” He made it clear, though, that those reaching such high speeds in Brevard County shouldn’t expect leniency. “Unfortunately for him, he was unaware that Brevard County does not issue any citations for violations,” the sheriff noted.
Sadly for Jones, he ended up missing the ceremony altogether and was taken to Brevard County Jail, which Ivey jokingly referred to as “Ivy’s Bar Lodge.” He was charged with driving over 100 mph, a misdemeanor, and was later released on $500 bail. His trial date is still pending.
The internet reaction was swift, with many users poking fun at the situation and Jones’ choice of footwear. Comments ranged from bewilderment about how one could be late for a 9 a.m. wedding to judgments about his “dress to impress” attire, indicating that sandals might not have fit that bill.
As for the enforcement initiative, officials emphasized its goal is to reduce reckless driving and ensure safer roads. More high-speed stops are anticipated in the future as part of this ongoing effort.
