New York City Mayor Race: Sliwa’s Challenge Against Mamdani
In the upcoming race for mayor in Democrat-controlled New York City, Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa believes he has a significant mission ahead. “We must defeat Zohran Mamdani to save this city,” Sliwa mentioned in a recent digital interview.
Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist and national lawmaker from Queens, shook up the political landscape back in June. Meanwhile, Andrew Cuomo, a former three-term governor who stepped down amid scandals in 2021, is running as an independent. Both he and Eric Adams are also eyeing a chance to win in a city where a GOP victory is, well, quite rare.
Cuomo’s Focus on Mamdani
Cuomo is aiming his sights on Mamdani, particularly regarding the decriminalization of prostitution—a significant issue in the campaign.
“Zoran is a Democratic candidate, but there are others in the race, including Eric Adams and Cuomo. They represent the lighter side of things compared to me,” Sliwa asserted. “I’m the only Republican candidate with real Republican values.”
Polls indicate that Mamdani maintains a solid lead, often showing double digits ahead of Cuomo and other contenders as the November election approaches.
Competing Voices in the Election
Jim Walden, a former federal prosecutor running as an independent, is also in the mix. Earlier this summer, Walden suggested an independent survey to identify candidates with the best chance of defeating Mamdani, a proposal partially accepted by Cuomo, but Adams and Sliwa have yet to agree to it.
“I’m not dropping out. I’m a key candidate here. Let the independents figure out who’s out,” Sliwa reiterated.
A well-known figure, Sliwa co-founded the Guardian Angels in the late 1970s and has since enjoyed a career in media. He’s vying for the mayoral seat for the second time but noted he hasn’t conversed with Donald Trump or anyone from his team recently.
Concerns About Extremism
“No, I haven’t spoken to Trump, even though I’ve known him for years. Our relationship has always been, um, complicated,” Sliwa mentioned. Meanwhile, Trump and GOP allies have been critical of Mamdani, labeling him a “communist” in an attempt to link his progressive ideals to a wider narrative against Democrats.
New York Mayor Eric Adams is also seeking re-election this year as an independent candidate. Interestingly, past conversations between Trump and Cuomo have reportedly included discussions about the mayoral race.
Sliwa encouraged Trump to remain neutral in the New York City election. He also pointed to ongoing conflicts, such as the situation in Gaza, suggesting it could affect voter sentiment.
“The best way for the president to support this campaign is through peace in Gaza. I mean, a lot of people are impacted by those events, and it trickles down to us in New York,” he said.
Known for his iconic red beret, Sliwa has been wearing it less frequently of late as he moves through his campaign. “When I’m on the subway, I engage with everyday folks; I might wear the beret then, but I feel more at ease without it among corporate circles,” he noted.
