Mason Howell: The New Amateur Champion

Mason Howell has emerged as the latest amateur champion in the United States, and he certainly made quite an impression.

There’s something uniquely captivating about amateur golf—and it has a rich history of stories to tell. Howell, who recently became a Georgia Bulldog, kicked off his junior year of high school this week as the top amateur player in the country. Just imagine walking into science class with him.

Howell clinched his victory at the Olympic Club, making him the youngest amateur winner in the U.S. in over 15 years. In fact, he’s only the third youngest winner ever—what an achievement! Mason embraced the surreal nature of it all when he shared his thoughts a few days after his impressive 7 and 6 win. You can catch the full conversation below.

We all recognize that match play can be quite a different challenge in golf, requiring a composure that’s almost essential, particularly in high-stakes competitions. Talking to Howell, it’s apparent he maintains an exceptionally calm demeanor. That will serve him well at the college level when he heads to Athens next year (it’s tough for me to say as a Florida Gator).

A Georgia native, Mason is often seen as a leader among fellow Georgians like Harris English. They really hit it off at the Oakmont U.S. Open, where Howell made his mark. English has been in the spotlight recently with his automatic qualifications for this year’s Ryder Cup team. As Howell gears up for the Walker Cup team, Bulldogs—past and present—will soon don those familiar red, white, and blue colors.

I was also curious about which aspects of his game Howell is keen to improve. Given his youth, it’s safe to say we’ll be hearing a lot from him over the next few years (again, the Gators).

When I posed the question, Mason displayed the same positive mindset that led him to victory in San Francisco. He emphasized that golf is fundamentally about consistency and expressed his desire to keep that at the forefront throughout his game.

He’s certainly poised for what lies ahead. Congratulations are definitely in order for this year’s U.S. amateur champion!
