Chuck Todd Critiques Putin’s Approach to Trump
Former NBC News host Chuck Todd expressed his belief on Wednesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin made a significant error by not providing President Donald Trump with a “win” during their recent summit in Alaska. This comment came during an episode of “The Chuck Toddcast,” where he discussed the dynamics between the two leaders.
Todd mentioned that Putin seems to have “very low respect” for Trump and perceives him as someone who is “really easy to manipulate.” He pointed out that despite the meeting, there were no concessions made, such as a temporary pause in the conflict in Ukraine.
Todd questioned why Putin had not given Trump anything substantial, saying, “He’s going to pay him lip service, right?” This seemed to underline his thoughts about the nature of their interactions.
The Alaska summit was held on Friday and focused on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has persisted for over three years. Todd highlighted that Putin “didn’t even give him a ceasefire” during their discussions, contrasting with Trump’s attempts at “shuttle diplomacy” between Putin and Ukrainian President Zelensky.
He remarked on the implications of Putin’s actions, suggesting that it undermines the notion that Putin wouldn’t have initiated the invasion in Ukraine. Todd questioned, “If Putin respected Trump, why not offer a temporary ceasefire?”
Todd further speculated that Putin thinks he can get away with merely providing lip service without having to take substantive action. “I think he’s miscalculating it,” he noted.
Moreover, Todd suggested that Trump might eventually realize that Putin’s gestures are merely superficial and not backed by any real plans. He argued this oversight could be detrimental to Putin, especially since Trump may be one of the more amenable U.S. presidents Putin has encountered.
In Todd’s view, not seizing the opportunity to enhance his image—particularly when he’s in a position where he could benefit from a ceasefire—was a misstep on Putin’s part. He commented that providing Trump with a temporary ceasefire could have bolstered Putin’s credibility in the eyes of the West.
