The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), under President Donald Trump, is set to implement a screening process for legal immigrants aiming to adjust their immigration status, particularly focusing on anti-American sentiments and connections to terrorist ideologies.
“We should not safeguard the interests of those who undermine the nation and advocate anti-American beliefs,” noted USCIS spokesperson Matthew Tragesser.
USCIS is devoted to executing policies designed to eliminate anti-Americanism and is fully committed to enforcing stringent screening measures. Immigrant benefits, such as living and working in the United States, are privileges, not rights.
The recent policy modifications can be found in the USCIS Guidance Manual, which instructs adjudicators to consider an immigrant’s previous views and actions in assessing their eligibility for specific immigration benefits.
“According to USCIS guidance, adherence to immigration laws is a key factor in deciding if discretion can be exercised,” the policy alert indicated. situation:
Updates to the policy manual clarify that USCIS assigns significant negative weight to situations where individuals support or advocate for terrorist organizations or engage in anti-American activities. This includes anyone endorsing or promoting anti-American ideologies; it will be taken into account in discretionary decisions.
Additionally, USCIS is enhancing its vetting of social media activity among legal immigrants, focusing on removing individuals with anti-American viewpoints. Such beliefs would be deemed a largely negative element in discretionary evaluations, officials indicated.
The Trump administration has initiated several reforms to ensure rigorous vetting for legal immigrants seeking to obtain U.S. citizenship.
For instance, USCIS Director Joseph Edrow recently circulated a memo aimed at refining the agency’s assessment of an applicant’s moral integrity during the citizenship process.
Tragesser commented that the revised naturalization process “ensures that new citizens not only embrace American culture, history, and language but also exhibit commendable moral character.”
