New Educational Choice for Children Act Offers Tax Benefits

The recently passed Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA) will enable taxpayers across the United States to redirect up to $1,700 of their federal taxes to the Crown Heights Scholarship Fund. Instead of sending this amount to the IRS, it will now support the Registered Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO), specifically this new fund.

The overall tax obligation won’t change, since the IRS offers dollar-for-dollar tax credits. However, taxpayers can now channel their contributions directly into tuition scholarships for families within the community. So, who qualifies for this assistance?

Families in Crown Heights with a household income below $280,000 can apply for tuition support. The more taxpayers participate, the more scholarships become available, resulting in millions of dollars increasing each year. Essentially, higher contributions to SGOs lead to larger scholarships for individual children.

When will this take effect?
The law is set to come into effect in 2027, so that’s just around 18 months away. For the time being, community members and families are encouraged to commit to the fund if they anticipate federal tax liability in 2027. Interestingly, this opportunity is available to anyone across the U.S.

How can one get involved?
You can pledge your commitment at www.chscholarshipfund.com and sign up for renewal. Once you’re in, your participation will bolster the support available for parents in need.

This initiative has great potential to alleviate tuition burdens for numerous families and could significantly transform the landscape in our neighborhood.

Dedicated individuals such as R. Sholom Wollosso and R. Motti Goldstein have played a crucial role in this effort. Their vision and commitment have opened doors to new opportunities for our community.
