The Smithsonian’s Historical Presentation Under Review
On Wednesday, CBS host Tony Dokoupil supported a proposal for President Donald Trump to reassess how the Smithsonian Institution showcases American history. During a segment on “CBS Morning,” Dokoupil discussed Trump’s criticism of the museum’s focus on the more troubling aspects of the nation’s past and emphasized a desire for a more positive portrayal.
“American history shouldn’t be presented with respect. It’s important to address our flaws,” Dokoupil mentioned. “Yet, we shouldn’t solely look at our history through a negative lens. There’s definitely room for a more balanced perspective.”
Trump has expressed his dissatisfaction with the Smithsonian’s portrayal of American history, claiming that it often leans towards a “woke” agenda that emphasizes darker chapters excessively. “It’s a Washington museum, but similar institutions across the country seem to focus only on the negative,” he stated, criticizing the lack of positive achievements highlighted in exhibits.
“We won’t let this continue. I’ve instructed my legal team to investigate this situation, similar to efforts made at universities where significant changes have occurred,” Trump stated.
On August 12, the White House communicated with the Smithsonian, stipulating a review of its exhibits in line with Trump’s directives to highlight American exceptionalism and eliminate any divisive themes.
Dokoupil remarked that the letter aligns closely with the Smithsonian’s current mission, which aims to unite the nation through a shared understanding of history. He further noted that Americans deserve to take pride in their history, and museums should reflect that pride.
“When you ask whether the world is better off because of America and its people, my answer is a resounding yes. I believe many visiting the Smithsonian would feel similarly,” he expressed.
Co-host Gail King countered by asserting that there’s no necessity to sanitize the country’s history. “I agree,” Dokoupil replied, while King insisted that Trump’s views on the subject represent an overcorrection rather than a balanced recounting of history.
