Tyson Bagent gets emotional about Bears' $10 million contract extension

Tyson Bagent’s Emotional Contract Extension with the Bears

The Chicago Bears have decided to show faith in their backup quarterback, Tyson Bagent, by granting him a two-year contract extension worth $10 million. This move seems to come amid speculation about Caleb Williams potentially becoming the team’s future star. During a press conference, Bagent couldn’t hold back tears as he expressed his gratitude for the opportunity.

While this contract isn’t a record-breaker, the total value can rise to $16 million with included incentives. It’s a substantial amount, and understandably, Bagent was quite emotional about such a significant financial milestone.

“Many people don’t know this, but my dad is the man on my right hand,” Bagent shared with reporters, visibly moved. He recounted how his father didn’t have running water during his own childhood, emphasizing how much this contract means for his family. “It certainly lifts a weight from our shoulders,” he added.

At 25 years old, Bagent entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent from Division II College Shepherd in 2023. Through skill and persistence, he earned his place as the backup quarterback behind Justin Fields during training camp that year.

When Fields was sidelined due to injury, Bagent stepped up and started four games, even achieving a memorable victory. This made him the first Division II quarterback to start an NFL game since 1950. His performance during this period was noteworthy, with a 2-2 record, but it’s clear that general manager Ryan Poles and the Bears organization were already looking ahead, particularly with their top overall pick from the last NFL Draft.

With Williams being drafted from USC and viewed as a possible franchise quarterback, Bagent had to step up during this year’s training camp to keep his position. The arrival of a new head coach, Ben Johnson, added pressure—as all eyes were on him to prove he still deserved the backup role.

Yet, not only did he rise to the challenge, but his dedication and work ethic genuinely impressed the organization.

Recently, in a preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, despite the Bears suffering a significant loss (38-0), Bagent managed to lead the team on three consecutive scoring drives following Williams’ strong performance. He completed 22 of 13 passes for 196 yards, including a touchdown. With the 2025 season approaching, Bagent knows that he must be prepared to step in if needed. For now, though, he is simply grateful for the recognition that his hard work has brought him.
