Bribery Allegations Against Former NYC Aide
Reports indicate that New York City journalists may have been targeted in an alleged bribery scheme involving Winnie Greco, a former aide to Mayor Eric Adams, who is currently campaigning for re-election.
Accusations suggest Greco attempted to provide cash to reporters, concealed in a bag of Herr’s Sour Cream & Onion chips, after a recent campaign event in Harlem. This incident reportedly unfolded following a gathering at Adams’ new campaign office.
According to City Hall journalist Katie Honan, she encountered Greco near the office and subsequently received an invitation via text from Greco to meet across the street. The two then made their way to a nearby Whole Foods, where Greco handed Honan a bag. Initially thinking it was a snack offering, Honan declined but Greco insisted it was being protected.
Afterwards, as Honan made her way to the subway, she opened the bag only to discover a red envelope containing over $100 in cash. When she tried to contact Greco, she learned that Greco had left the area. This led to a suggestion by Greco to meet in Chinatown, where Honan managed to return the money while questioning the situation when there was no follow-up from Greco.
Later that same day, Greco was interviewed by authorities and reportedly expressed remorse multiple times. She described her intentions as “cultural,” insisting she just aimed to build a friendship.
In the wake of these events, Honan contacted the Department of Investigation (DOI). Greco’s lawyer claimed the cash was consistent with a Chinese custom of expressing gratitude and friendship, although did not clarify the reason for hiding it in a chip bag.
When Honan returned to her office, she turned over the bag to her editor, and the publication subsequently notified the city’s research department. Despite the cash issue, officials noted that they wouldn’t open any envelopes or count the money inside.
Following these revelations, the Adams campaign has decided to bar Greco from any volunteer activities linked to the campaign.
Greco, who is reportedly unfamiliar with law enforcement, has been under federal investigation since early 2024. The FBI conducted a raid on a Bronx residence with links to allegations that Greco’s prior campaign colluded with the Turkish government for fundraising activities. She stepped down from her role in Asian American Affairs thereafter.
Additionally, investigations are underway regarding claims that Greco pressured campaign volunteers for personal favors in exchange for political work. Efforts to reach both the Greco and Adams campaigns for comments were unsuccessful prior to publication.
