Dr. James Dobson Passes Away at 89

Dr. James Dobson, a prominent child psychologist and pastor, who played a significant role in shaping the conservative Christian movement in the United States, has died at the age of 89.

In the 1970s, he founded a powerful platform for family-focused evangelical groups, advising five presidents over the years and hosting weekly radio shows that reached 1,500 stations.

An official statement on Thursday referred to Dobson as a “pioneer,” highlighting his profound beliefs and the impact he had on how generations perceive their faith, families, and culture. It noted, “His bold leadership, integrity, and compassion helped equip countless families to thrive in a world of changing values. He was a leader, counselor, and a steady voice of truth in turbulent times.”

Starting in 1977, Dobson shifted his focus toward family issues, becoming a vital voice among conservative leaders. He participated in Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign as a member of the Evangelical Executive Advisory Committee, despite initially backing Senator Ted Cruz for the Republican nomination.

A 2005 article in the New York Times labeled Dobson as “the most influential evangelical leader in the country,” emphasizing his readiness to engage politically and beyond the traditional confines of the church and media.

He frequently advocated for what he termed “traditional family” values and was a vocal opponent of both abortion and LGBTQ rights.

Though not a formally appointed pastor, Dobson officially established the James Dobson Family Institute in 2010, shifting to a more political focus while continuing his nationwide radio broadcasts.

Just before the 2016 election, he expressed his support for Trump online, arguing that the next president would have the power to shape the Supreme Court significantly. Trump ultimately appointed three conservative justices, which led to significant changes in abortion rights, including a reversal of Roe v. Wade.

“The next president will nominate more than three justices; their judicial philosophy will influence our nation for generations,” Dobson remarked, and he was proven right in that prediction.
