Ohio Girl Undergoes Life-Saving Heart Transplant
An 11-year-old girl from Ohio recently received a critical heart transplant after facing significant health challenges. Ava Cooper, by the age of five, had already endured four major surgeries and spent over 200 days on the transplant waiting list.
Ava was born with several heart defects, and her journey began with her first surgery just six days before her fifth birthday. Interestingly, she showed no symptoms for nearly five years, but that changed in the summer of 2024.
“Ava started getting sick. I noticed she had swelling in her face and was struggling to breathe. The doctors diagnosed her with heart failure,” her mother, Jamie Cooper, explained.
After a thorough evaluation, physicians determined that further surgeries would not help Ava. Instead, Dr. Madeleine Townsend advised that she needed a new heart. Ava was placed on the transplant list in September 2024, and by March 2025, the family received the call they had been waiting for: a donor heart was ready for her.
Sean Cooper, Ava’s father, recalled his emotions upon learning of the transplant. “Seeing your child go through such difficult times and knowing a solution is finally here—it’s a blessing,” he shared.
Since the transplant, Jamie noted that Ava has been improving steadily. “The further she gets from the surgery, the more she improves and looks like her old self,” she remarked.
Despite their lengthy hospital stay, the Cooper family made efforts to maintain a sense of normalcy. They celebrated birthdays and holidays together, even sharing Sunday dinners within the confines of the hospital. Ava was able to dance with her father in February 2025—a small yet magical moment given the circumstances.
“I missed my school dance with my dad, but being able to dance with him at the hospital was special,” said Ava, who described it as “magical and cool.”
Following her surgery, Ava spent an additional month recovering in the hospital. Now, her new heart is functioning well, showing no immediate signs of rejection, although the medical team will continue to monitor her condition in the coming days.
Jamie’s belief is that Ava has a purpose to fulfill. “I truly believe that God gave her this opportunity to achieve great things,” she stated.
