The reason behind Petra Kvitova's retirement after the US Open

It seems like it’s finally Petra Kvitova’s moment to step back.

The two-time Wimbledon champion has announced that she’s retiring after the US Open. Alongside her husband and coach, Jiri Vanek, she’s looking forward to a new chapter, especially with their son expected in July 2024.

“I feel ready to call it a day,” the 35-year-old stated in an interview. “Honestly, I don’t think I can handle it anymore, in terms of mental, emotional, and physical demands.”

“You remember how fluidly you used to play, hitting winners with ease, and then suddenly it’s just… different. I’m completely ready for this next step. I have no regrets. I still care about tennis, but the waiting around for practice, or for matches, is just exhausting. And with a son on the way, I really want to focus more on family,” she added.

Kvitova’s ascent in women’s tennis kicked off in 2011 when she claimed her first Wimbledon title, showcasing her powerful left-handed serve.

She’s a well-regarded figure in the sport, having reached a world ranking of second.

Her life flipped upside down after a frightening home invasion in December 2016, where she was attacked by a robber. The injuries to her left hand took a toll and sidelined her for five months.

“I always viewed myself as a fighter on the court, but going through that experience showed me I had to fight in a totally different way,” Kvitova reflected.

“Playing tennis after that was a challenge; it brought a wave of emotions—there were tears on the court, flashbacks, and tough nights. It was anything but easy.”

Currently, her rankings have fallen to a position around 540, with a disappointing 1-7 record this year, including early exits at the French Open and Wimbledon.

Historically, her best results at the US Open were quarterfinal appearances in both 2015 and 2017.

She mentioned to the paper that the most heartbreaking match of her career was her defeat to Naomi Osaka in the 2019 Australian Open Final.

The US Open is set to kick off this Sunday.
