Concerns Rise After Mayor’s Resignation Linked to Chinese Influence
Outrage is growing following the revelation that the mayor of Arcadia, California, Eileen Wang, who just resigned after admitting to being a Chinese agent, notably donated to Democratic candidates, including current members of Congress.
This comes as former President Donald Trump embarks on a diplomatic trip to China with global leaders. Wang has pled guilty to acting as an agent for the Chinese government, a situation that has heightened fears about foreign infiltration in local politics. Her contributions to Democrats have now raised significant national security alarms.
According to Federal Election Commission (FEC) records, Wang made a $1,000 and a $175 donation to the campaign of Democratic Rep. Judy Chu between October and November 2022. Chu is a member of the House Ways and Means Committee and the House Budget Committee.
FEC filings also reveal smaller donations of $5, $10, and $25 that Wang made to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee via ActBlue in 2024.
In light of this situation, Bernadette Breslin from the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) condemned the Democratic Party, claiming these donations highlight a “malign Chinese influence” within their ranks.
Breslin emphasized that “Senate Republicans are holding Democrats accountable for this issue and for the Chinese Communist Party-linked money entering their campaigns.” She further pointed out that while Trump seeks peace in China, Republicans are striving to eliminate foreign interference in elections for national security.
Having resigned her position, Wang has agreed to plead guilty to a felony charge of being an illegal agent for the People’s Republic of China, with a potential sentence of up to 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine, although the final decision rests with the judge.
Wang reportedly admitted to operating under the direction of Chinese officials from at least 2020 to 2022, collaborating with individuals in the U.S. to promote pro-China narratives, all while failing to inform the U.S. Attorney General as mandated by law. This activity took place before she was officially sworn in as a City Council member in December 2022.
The exposure of Wang’s foreign connections has put a spotlight on the politicians she funded, who now face intense scrutiny.
Besides the notable donations, Chu’s 2024 press release acknowledged Wang as one of her “Female Representatives of the Year.” In that same release, Wang was portrayed as a “dedicated Arcadia resident, educator, and community leader,” with over 15 years of involvement in local organizations.
Chu’s office highlighted Wang’s insights into the challenges of Arcadia residents and her commitment to improving their lives through her City Council work.
Amidst these developments, reactions from other politicians have surfaced. Senator Jim Banks (R-Ind.), vice chairman of the NRSC, criticized the Democratic Party, referencing past incidents involving other politicians and Chinese spies. He questioned, “How many more?” demonstrating a pattern of concern about foreign influence.
Some conservative TikTok users have also weighed in, discussing Wang’s contributions and suggesting that if the roles were reversed, it would dominate the news cycle.
Fox News Digital has reached out to Chu’s office for comments, but none have been received yet.
