Shonda Rhimes Voices Concerns Over Self-Censorship in Hollywood

Notable television producer Shonda Rhimes has expressed worries that creatives in Hollywood might be “self-censoring” to align with President Donald Trump’s views after recent agreements with Disney and Paramount.

During an event at the Edinburgh Television Festival, where she received the inaugural Edinburgh Fellowship Award, Rhimes addressed the recent settlement involving Paramount and the President concerning a misleading compilation from CBS News related to an interview with Kamala Harris. While she refrained from commenting on that specific incident, she indicated that a shift is occurring in the industry.

“For many people, self-censorship is definitely ongoing,” Rhimes stated.

Many in Hollywood feel pressured to hide their political beliefs, especially as those who diverge from prevailing ideologies face intense scrutiny. This concern about “censorship” in Hollywood coming from Rhimes might seem somewhat ironic given the current climate.

Additionally, Rhimes discussed her departure from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. She stepped down in February after the new president revamped the theater’s operations and made changes to the board.

Having served as treasurer, she noted that she remained longer than some of her peers. “When that transition took place, I was literally the only artist from the old administration of the Kennedy Center,” she observed at the festival. “So, in my opinion, it was no longer a board. It certainly isn’t a board with the same mission as when I came in.”

Rhimes has been a strong supporter of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential election, actively using her shows to advocate for abortion rights. She also joined the Planned Parenthood National Committee in 2017.

In 2022, Rhimes created a significant series that led her to leave Twitter during Elon Musk’s management of the platform.
