Trump to join law enforcement in monitoring DC streets during crime initiative

Trump’s Efforts to Reduce Crime in D.C.

President Donald Trump is stepping up his initiative to address crime in Washington, D.C. On Thursday night, he announced plans to patrol the city alongside law enforcement, aiming to get a closer look at the crime situation. This move follows his earlier actions to bolster the Metropolitan Police Department and deploy the National Guard in early August to tackle rising violent crimes.

Trump remarked, “I’m going out tonight with the police and the military. The National Guard is great. They did a great job.” This statement comes amidst reports of crime rate fluctuations. Notably, an earlier change in policy seemed to have an immediate effect, as crime rates sank soon after Trump’s measures were put in place.

D.C. registered a troubling murder rate in 2024, reported at 27.3 per 100,000 residents, which is significantly higher—almost six times—that of New York City. Compared to stats from a decade ago, when the rate was about 13.9 per 100,000, the shift indicates a concerning trend.

The rise in violent crime was stark, with nearly 29,348 recorded offenses last year, including over 3,400 violent crimes, actionable assaults, and numerous car thefts. Interestingly, a recent report indicated that, after the policy enforcement, the city had not seen a single murder for an entire week. Carjacking incidents reportedly dropped by 83%, while robberies and car thefts saw substantial declines as well.

As of now, the White House highlighted that more than 630 arrests had been made since Trump initiated action, with a notable portion involving illegal immigrants and gang members. Trump’s observations reflect a broader hope that D.C. will soon regain its status as a safe and inviting city.

“Until four days ago, Washington, D.C. was the least safe city in the United States,” Trump noted, expressing optimism about the recent improvements. “Now, in a short period of time, it’s probably the safest and getting better every hour!”
