Chiefs explain why they stayed silent about the 2024 incident in Andy Reid's office

Chiefs Address 2024 Shooting Incident

The Kansas City Chiefs chose to keep the details of a shooting incident from May 2024, which occurred at their training facility and shattered windows in head coach Andy Reid’s office, under wraps for quite some time. It’s a decision that seems to reflect careful consideration of the situation.

This story, initially reported by the Kansas City Star, has resurfaced after around 15 months. Chief President Mark Donovan indicated to the Athletic that following the incident, the organization reviewed its processes and safety protocols.

Donovan explained that the choice to minimize publicity around the shooting was based on consultations with experts in investigations, communication, and safety. They believed that discretion was the best course of action.

“We took a step back and assessed the situation. This is what we’ve dealt with,” Donovan said, summarizing their thought process. “From a communication standpoint, we made our decision and moved forward.”

As for the investigation, it is ongoing, and no arrests have been made. In Wednesday’s report, it was mentioned that Reid’s office still features bulletproof glass, but Donovan did not confirm this detail.

Interestingly, Donovan pointed out that Reid hasn’t altered his routines or moved his office since that troubling incident. “We followed the same steps as before. He was fully engaged with what we were doing, how we were tackling this,” Donovan shared.

However, Donovan didn’t address how the shooting might have affected Reid mentally, which perhaps leaves us wondering about the broader implications of safety on personal well-being.

The Chiefs are gearing up for their upcoming preseason game against the Bears, marking the first public address by Reid since news of the shooting became known. It’s been an eventful ride for him as he enters his twelfth season as head coach, during which he’s led the team to three Super Bowl victories in five years.
