Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) is getting involved in Washington, DC, to enforce traffic and licensing regulations, particularly in response to a rise in illegal moped drivers.
The city has been facing an influx of moped users delivering food and other goods, many of whom seem either unaware of or intentionally disregard safety and regulatory guidelines. Local police have recently intensified efforts to address this issue, targeting the dangerous and unlawful moped operators.
Unfortunately, it appears that local prosecutors often release individuals arrested by DC police, making the enforcement efforts feel somewhat futile. However, with ICE now participating, drivers without legal status may face not just release, but also potential detention and deportation.

According to reports from the Washington Post, ICE officers are shadowing DC police and intervening during traffic stops to check the immigration status of moped drivers. If any violations are found, these drivers may be detained.
As explained by a police officer, ICE agents are present during stops to assist in verifying drivers’ permits and immigration status.
DC City Council member Chanda Jayaraman expressed concern over the growing danger posed by moped drivers who weave in and out of traffic, often ignoring traffic laws altogether.
“They drive recklessly. There isn’t enough guidance on what they need to do legally,” Jayaraman stated in an interview, adding, “I think we can certainly improve in that area.”
NewsNation reported that delivery services like Uber and Doordash struggle to verify the identity of applicants, which complicates the hiring process.
As many drivers are classified as “independent contractors,” they often evade the rigorous background checks required for typical employees. Usually, they only need to present a valid driver’s license and a Social Security number, which can be easily faked or obtained fraudulently.

So far, there haven’t been any assessments to check whether these drivers can read English to understand road signs or comprehend basic traffic laws.
There have been instances where immigrants using mopeds have been involved in thefts, including items like phones and expensive bikes.
The safety risks linked to these moped operators became evident recently when a driver drew a firearm on New York police officers and was subsequently shot.
Rahion Soto, a 30-year-old from the Dominican Republic, was killed after brandishing a gun at an NYPD officer in Washington Heights. Reports indicate that he was an undocumented immigrant suspected of participating in multiple thefts.
