Recall: Trump claimed Bolton ought to 'go to jail' for his 2020 book

The recent FBI search of John Bolton’s home, who served as President Trump’s national security adviser, has rekindled discussions about Trump’s past remarks regarding former officials from his administration.

The relationship between Trump and Bolton has been contentious since their collaboration during Trump’s initial term. The president has openly suggested that Bolton and other advisers who have published sensitive information should face legal consequences due to the contents of Bolton’s book, “The Room Where It Happened.”

Trump has been quite vocal, saying, “He released a large amount of classified, confidential, but classified information. It’s illegal, and you’ll go to jail for that.” He referred to Bolton’s actions as “rebellious” in a June 2020 interview.

Further expressing his views, Trump stated, “He shouldn’t have written a book, did he? Classified information should land him in prison for many years. As for what might happen next, it’s not up to me, but the Department of Justice might not be pleased.” Another interview from that period featured “Fox & Friends” co-anchor Brian Kilmeade labeling Bolton a “criminal,” emphasizing the classified material discussed in his book.

CNN reported that the FBI action at Bolton’s residence was tied to his 2020 book, which offers a critical perspective on Trump’s administration, characterizing him as ill-equipped to manage the White House and expressing that he “sees a conspiracy behind every rock.”

Officials from the Trump administration had previously attempted to block the book’s release, arguing it included classified information, which led to an investigation. Bolton’s legal team contended that the material in question was not classified. Ultimately, in 2021, the Department of Justice under the Biden administration decided to drop the lawsuit and concluded its inquiry.

Despite the ongoing controversies, Bolton continues to express his opinions on matters of foreign policy, particularly regarding the Ukraine conflict, and he made a social media post on Friday morning.

The FBI confirmed on Friday that they were engaged in “court-sanctioned law enforcement activities” in a vicinity close to Washington, D.C., near Bolton’s residence in Bethesda, Maryland. Reports indicate that Bolton is not in custody and has not been charged with any crime.

In the early hours, FBI director Kash Patel, while not specifically naming Bolton, mentioned on social media that federal agents had been active at the homes of former national security officials. Statements from figures like Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino echoed similar sentiments, with Bongino declaring, “Public corruption will not be tolerated.”
