The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) now estimates that tariffs could lead to a $4 trillion reduction in the deficit over the next decade. This is an increase of $1 trillion compared to their June forecasts.
According to a report:
CBO Director Philip Swagel mentioned in a blog post that tariff revenues are expected to decrease the main deficit by $3.3 trillion and reduce interest payments on borrowings by $700 billion, collectively amounting to a $4 trillion cut by 2035. The CBO’s earlier projection in June was a total of $3 trillion in cuts, but the scale of tariffs has expanded since then.
The overarching idea is that tariffs are generating significant revenue quickly, leading even some critics to acknowledge that they might be hard to eliminate without alternative income sources.
While there are valid concerns about the repercussions of tariffs, including economic impacts and increased uncertainty, the Responsible Federal Budget Committee emphasized that policymakers shouldn’t eliminate them without finding a way to compensate for lost revenue.
