Cruz Backs Chip Roy for Texas Attorney General
Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) endorsed Representative Chip Roy’s campaign for Texas Attorney General, expressing his support for the former Chief of Staff on Saturday.
“I’m proud to support Texas Attorney General Chip Roy. He has been not only my Chief of Staff but also my best friend and ally for more than 12 years,” Cruz stated.
Chip Roy formally launched his campaign for Attorney General on Thursday, aiming to succeed retired Attorney General Ken Paxton (R), who has served in the role since 2014. It was earlier reported that Roy was eyeing top law enforcement posts in Texas starting in early August.
“The next Texas Attorney General must demonstrate a solid record of fighting to uphold and protect our legacy,” Roy remarked in a video promoting his campaign.
In addition to Roy, other Republican candidates in the race for Attorney General include state senators Joan Huffman and Mays Middleton, along with Aaron Raitz, who previously worked for Republican senators from May 2023 until March of this year.
Cruz commended Roy, who has been active since 2019 and is part of the Conservative House Freedom Caucus, highlighting his “consistent courage, integrity, and commitment to defending our great nation.”
“He is a battle-tested warrior and a strong advocate for the Constitution. I’m fully confident that he will uphold the law, protect Texans’ rights and freedoms, and confront those who threaten our great nation’s accountability,” Cruz added on Saturday. “No one is better equipped to lead the Texas Attorney General’s office. He understands how to fight for and defend the Lone Star State.”
Roy previously clashed with Paxton, having urged his resignation amid bribery allegations in 2020. Notably, former President Trump has not yet endorsed any candidate in this race.
