Vance Responds to Texas Gerrymandering Concerns

Vice President JD Vance addressed questions on Sunday from NBC’s Meet the Press host Kristen Welker regarding claims from Texas Republicans about redrawing congressional maps aimed at gaining an edge in elections.

As the 2026 midterm elections approach, the focus is on five districts that now lean more Republican, following the passage of a new congressional map by Texas Senators on Friday.

Welker began by pointing out, “So they expanded the map for Republicans in their state. If President Trump’s agenda is so popular, why should Republicans need to add seats?”

Vance responded by prompting Welker to consider, “Why have Democrats actively gerrymandered their state over the last couple of decades?” He cited Massachusetts as an example, noting that even with 32% of its residents voting Republican, the state doesn’t have a single Republican representative.

He elaborated, “We’re trying to make things more equitable on a national level. Democrats have really pushed their own agenda through aggressive gerrymandering, and I think there’s a chance to counter that.” Vance also noted that Democrats have been very strategic about altering maps to their advantage.

In reaction, several Democratic leaders, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, have initiated efforts to redraw maps in their own states to counter Texas Republicans. Newsom recently signed a law that overturns the existing congressional maps and grants the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee the authority to design new ones.

The new bill will allow Californians to weigh in during a special election on November 4th.

Vance has urged Republicans to respond to this situation, emphasizing the need to “rescale” and stand firm against what he views as an unfair system. He suggested that drawing new maps is a necessary step for Republicans, mirroring the actions of blue states.

He expressed indifference towards Newsom and other Democrats, remarking, “There’s not much left to gain from their tactics. They’ve done as much as they can.” Overall, Vance seems to advocate for more proactive measures among Republican constituencies to counter the political landscape.
