Florida Democrat: DeSantis, Trump 'declared war on people of color'

Debbie Wasserman Schultz Critiques DeSantis’ Actions Regarding Immigrant Detention

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a Democrat from Florida, has accused Governor Ron DeSantis and allies of former President Trump of “declaring war on people of color.” She expressed her concerns over a controversial detention facility nicknamed “crocodile alcatraz” and what she described as “whitewashing attempts.”

“What Maga Republicans and Ron DeSantis really care about is human rights violations. It’s about declaring a war on education and history,” she said during her appearance on CNN’s “Newsroom.” She criticized their efforts to distort history at institutions like the Smithsonian Museum.

Regarding the detention facilities, she commented, “If they were placing them in an appropriate location, that might be one thing, but this feels like just a stunt.” She belongs to a small group of Democratic legislators who recently toured the controversial site in Florida.

While DeSantis’ office hasn’t responded directly to requests for comments, he defended Trump’s policies and the federal support that led to the facility’s establishment, which is meant to house immigrants awaiting deportation.

DeSantis remarked, “We’re not going to back down. We believe we are justified in this, although I need to be cautious as we move forward with this project.”

Recently, a federal judge in Florida has mandated that new immigrant detentions be put on pause and expansion efforts be halted.

Democratic lawmakers are pushing for more transparency regarding the facility amid increasing legal challenges. Wasserman Schultz connected the detention center issue to a broader Republican agenda, highlighting concerns about how American history is portrayed in exhibitions at the Smithsonian. She also signaled worries about the surge in ICE arrests of undocumented immigrants.

“This shouldn’t be happening—it’s simply outrageous,” she declared. “And rest assured, Democrats will continue to push back.”

She characterized the actions surrounding the detention facility as political theatrics from the outset, expressing concern over potential human rights violations and environmental consequences.

Wasserman Schultz feared that the facility could reverse decades of restoration efforts around the Everglades and noted that the interests of local tribes were ignored in the planning process.

“It’s not just a public issue,” she concluded.
