Sanctus Real Shares the Hope of Jesus in a Strong Concert at a Prison

Sanctus Real Performs at Grafton Correctional Facility

Sanctus Real, a Grammy-nominated band, held a concert at the Grafton Correctional Facility in Ohio, drawing in an audience of inmates who often remain unacknowledged in discussions about ministry. This performance was arranged in conjunction with an organization designed to send musical acts into prisons, aiming to offer hope through music. The four songs from the concert can be found on YouTube.

Being the largest security facility, Grafton provided a unique backdrop for the band’s mission.

According to one band member, the inmates really “accepted” the music. “At the end of that, we felt like God did what we felt called to do. Honestly, it’s one of the best feelings you can have,” he shared.

What set this event apart wasn’t just the location but the vibe—it genuinely felt like a concert. The atmosphere transformed the prison space into an intimate setting, reflecting a deep respect for the inmates, as noted by band member Rory.

Rory also mentioned he thought carefully about what to convey from the stage, acknowledging that the power of such Christian concerts might not translate in a correctional setting as it would with more conventional audiences.

“We typically engage with churchgoers who often share similar beliefs, so there’s a common language,” he explained. “It required a lot of thought and prayer.” He felt anxious at the concert’s start but left with a sense of blessing.

Interestingly, the guards reminded everyone to keep an eye on their surroundings, adding a layer of tension. Rory pointed out, “The Bible encourages us to reach out in love to those in prison. When you actually visit, you see these individuals at their most vulnerable.” And despite their challenging pasts, many within the facility display a hunger for hope.

Guitarist Chris Roman described the atmosphere as filled with a spirit of peace and connection. “Playing in churches usually means engaging with people from similar backgrounds, but this experience felt profoundly unique. It reaffirmed the value of our songs in that environment,” he reflected.

Meanwhile, drummer Mark Glalman remarked on the joy present during the performance, noting, “I’m not entirely sure who was serving whom that day.”
